Outreach at St. Elizabeth's:  Time, Talent and Money at Work

Outreach Auction 2008:  Sherwood Forest

Thank you to everyone who attended our annual festive event and for those who supported the "Evening for Outreach " Dinner and Auction.  The evening, filled with fellowship and competitive bidding, helped us raise over $50,000 for Outreach grants!  Hats off to you for your generosity— for sharing your blessings with others.

The evening would not have been possible without the efforts of many dedicated, talented people. It’s always a dynamic experience to watch individuals come together and coalesce into a team that pulls off a large event successfully.  I want to recognize and thank all the committee heads listed below who worked diligently to pull it off.  Also, thanks should go to those who came to the workshops leading up to the auction.  Everyone who volunteered played a part to bring the fellowship event and auction to a successful conclusion.

Behind the scenes, year after year, Alice Palmer does so much for the Outreach Auction.  She creates the catalogue, the bid sheets, and heads up the board workshops. This year she created a new way to close out the auction, and the close-out process was smoother than ever!  Thank you, Alice, for all that you do this year and every year to bring our Auction success!

I also want to thank my co-chair, Sarah Strauss, for her constant enthusiasm.  Sarah will be chairing the Auction next year, so if you’re a new member, take this to heart! Sarah is great to work with, you will have the opportunity to get to know many members at St. Elizabeth’s, and you will be part of something that makes a positive impact within the church and outside in the larger community.  Many best wishes to Sarah and next year’s committee, and I look forward to helping out in some way.

Kathy Cohen, Chair

Now is the Night of Paying

Several people asked for the words to the final song that Marcia Bakshi, Catherine and Greg Hostetler, and George Swope sang at the May Outreach Auction (madrigal to be sung to the tune of Thomas Morley’s "Now is the Month of Maying "):

Now is the night of paying
for worthy causes playing, fa la la la la...
But it’s not for our leisure
We offer up our treasure, fa la la la la...
Through giving we perceive
the blessings we receive, fa la la la la...
When sharing is our aim
God’s mercy we proclaim, fa la la la la...

Fie then, why sit we musing,
Our call to love refusing? fa la la la la...
Come now, get out your wallet
However big or small, it, fa la la la la...

Give up that miser’s frown
Put a big star in your crown, fa la la la la...
So ante up your wad
And give it up for God, fa la la la la...

From the Outreach Committee

The Outreach Committee thanks all the many people who worked so hard to make the Outreach Auction Dinner such a fun night and big success.  We also thank those who donated time and items and those who bid on the items.  Your generosity is inspiring.

In an effort to better communicate who we have supported, we will use this space to mention briefly the organizations to which we have made grants in the past.

St. Philip’s Academy  This school, located in Newark, NJ, seeks to provide a rigorous academic and moral education to elementary and middle school children of the city of Newark and its environs. St. Philip’s, a school in the Episcopal tradition, strives to create within its students a love of learning, an intellectual curiosity, and a sense of duty to the community that will enable them to make thoughtful and morally informed decisions throughout their lives. Leadership qualities are developed in a culturally diverse experience. The school exists to provide a unique educational opportunity for capable students, regardless of their ability to pay, enabling them upon graduation to be successful in the most selective secondary schools in the nation.  Amount of 2007 grant:  $13,000.

Mustard Seed School  This school, located in Hoboken, NJ, was founded in 1979 to address the educational needs of the urban community, to stimulate and broaden the experiences of city children, and to educate students in an intercultural, interdenominational Christian setting. While the social, ethnic, and national back-grounds of the students are quite diverse, the scope of this program is local.  Amount of 2007 grant:  $2,000.

The Outreach Committee welcomes new members at any time.  Come help decide how the funds entrusted to the committee by you and the Vestry are distributed.  The time commitment is one evening per month (generally the first Wednesday of each month), which lasts an average of about two or two and a half hours, plus a visit to two of the local organizations that have made grant requests to St. Elizabeth’s.

Upcoming Outreach Committee Meeting Dates:     June 4th at 7:30 pm
                                                                             July 2nd at 7:30 pm

The Outreach Committee does the work of Christ by sharing the resources of St. Elizabeth's Church with those in need by:

 1. Responding directly to the needs of people in our area with appropriate contributions of money, time, and talent;
 2. Providing assistance worldwide, utilizing the resources of the Episcopal Church where appropriate;
 3. Informing, involving, and inspiring all the people of St. Elizabeth's Church regarding our outreach efforts;
 4. Serving as a resource for coordination, but not control, of the outreach of all St. Elizabeth's groups so that collectively we may make the greatest impact on the needs of others.

The current outreach committee has 18 members.  High School students are invited to become members of this committee.  Their opinions are important to the ongoing work and fellowship of Outreach.  There are still opportunities for any parishioner who wishes to join the committee in its work.  We meet on the first Wednesday of each month (with the exception of July) at 7:30 pm in the Parlor.   There are no meetings in August or January.

All organizations who apply for an outreach grant from the church receive a visit from a member of the committee.  All reports from members are considered by the committee before final grants are recommended to the Vestry in November.  The outreach committee is also responsible for organizing all food, clothing, etc. drives on selected Sundays during the year.

If you are interested in joining the Outreach Committee, speak with Chris Nettleton (Chair)
