Ministry to, for, and by children continues to be a high priority for St. Elizabeth's. With nearly 50 volunteer adult teachers, we have a "faculty" characterized by enthusiasm for teaching, care for children, and dedication to bringing the stories, songs, guidance, and comfort of the Christian faith to our youngest members.

Our tradition of excellence in Christian Education depends on our cooperative principle: every family with children contributes one term a year for three years as a teacher or in a comparable role. Working with the clergy and the Church School Committee, Lois Chapman directs our Church School.

Church School Learning Goals In Church School, children learn Bible stories, prayers, songs, and hymns, and they take part in a worship service every week, either with other children or with the rest of the congregation at the 10:00 am service. Using a variety of crafts, art projects, and games, teachers engage imaginations. Drawing on personal experiences and real-life situations, teachers bring the meaning of the Bible into a current context.

Teachers and clergy provide instruction on the Eucharist within regular classes, and the clergy offer a special Introduction to Communion for five- and six-year-olds in the winter. Approximately once a month, children in Grades 3-8 gather in the Willard School for their own celebration of the Eucharist, led jointly by a member of the clergy and nine children from the Church School. All baptized children are invited to receive the bread and wine at any communion service. Children may also receive a blessing instead of the bread and wine.

The Schedule

Family Eucharist: All Church School children stay in church.  There is no Church School on those days.

Holy Eucharist: Pre-K through Grade 2 start in chapel in Willard School; Grades 3-8 start in Church, then go to Willard School for Eucharist, and then to class.

Morning Prayer: Pre-K through Grade 2 start in chapel in Willard School; Grades 3-8 start in Church, then go to class.
