From
the Church School
Included in each lesson in our Church School curriculum is a
prayer segment. Most often, its purpose is to help learners
focus on the themes of the lesson. The child is to set aside
the other wants and cares of the day. The mind is to be engaged
in the holy. It is to be free to hear God's words, God's call.
Prayer asks the petitioner to be still and to think deeply. It
requires patience and personal discipline. These are the very
things we often omit in the daily bustle of getting our children
to school and to activities. We end a busy, stimuli-filled day
with finishing touches on the homework. We crowd out the very
thing our children need most, a time to think and reflect. They
need a time to see themselves in the context of a greater world
and a grander plan. They need a time of prayer.

October is fire prevention month. We will be conducting a fire
drill in conjunction with the Ridgewood Fire Department one
Sunday during the month. In preparation, each classroom has
been clearly marked with fire exits and instructions. There are
at least two exit routes for each classroom. Teachers have been
given instruction in how to evacuate classes safely. On the day
of the drill, all Church School children will move out of the
building to the California Street sidewalk where each will be
accounted for. They will await an all clear and return to the
building. Since the alarm will sound throughout the building,
you will be informed before the drill begins.
Church
School offering envelopes are dated for a calendar year.
Therefore, most of our Church School students have a set for
2008, issued last December or January. If your child needs
offering envelopes, let the classroom teacher know so that I can
issue a set that will carry them through December. We have an
offertory during Chapel for our younger children. Older
students may drop their envelope into a plate in the narthex on
their way to class.
